In 2023, I had the opportunity to work alongside Vladislav Solovjov, the UXUI, and visualisation teams at Lotus on designing the user experience of the Theory 1 Concept Car.
Our goal was to create a borderless/boundless digital experience that focused on the driver whilst transcending multiple digital screens. Inspired by the principles of the Arte Programmata movement of Post-War Italy - we devised a functional and aesthetic concept that would seamlessly change and shift with the personal experience of the user.
’What if we used central forces to control the displacement of point and line?’
The dynamic ‘Point and line’ grid reacted real-time to the user and the performance of the vehicle.
The concept enabled us infinite possibilities within a defined space and potential for extreme scale changes - with potential for transitional 2D to 3D graphics.
The Lotus Theory 1 was revealed in September 2024 as a manifesto for the future of Lotus design principles. The UXUI demonstrated within the car is a precursor to the humanistic digital future of the Lotus brand.
The project was named Concept Car of the Year 2025 by Auto & Design.
ARTE PROGRAMMATA
Italian avant-garde’s pioneering experiments with art and technology and their subversion of freedom and control.
In postwar Italy, a group of visionary artists used emergent computer technologies as both tools of artistic production and a means to reconceptualize the dynamic interrelation between individual freedom and collectivity.
